Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, often in the legs, potentially leading to serious complications like pulmonary embolism. Timely treatment is critical to prevent these risks.
Catheter Assisted Therapy
This is used in patients with massive deep vein thrombosis extending to the iliac vein or inferior vena cava. A catheter is placed in the occluded segment of DVT and the thrombolytic drug is infused for a certain period of time( usually 24 hours) alone or with ultrasonographic waves. ( EKOS system )
Angioplasty and Stent
After the dissolution of the thrombus if there is still residual severe stenosis in the vessel then the vessel is dilated with a balloon and stents designed for the venous system may be implanted if necessary.
DVT with Postthrombotic Syndrome
Patients with chronic DVT and Postthrombotic Syndrome ( venous ulcers, severe edema in the lower extremities) can also be treated with balloon angioplasty and venous stenting whenever needed.
