How do I know if I’m on the verge of a heart attack?

You will have moderate or severe symptoms of chest pain, tightness and heaviness even at mild or ordinary exercise. Also, the mild symptoms that you have had for months, may get moderate to severe even at ordinary exercise. When the symptoms are progressing, it is a sign of an impending heart attack.

What to do when a heart attack occurs?

Inform relatives or neighbours and call 911 for an ambulance. Keep your doors open, lie on the ground with your legs up and intermittent coughing. Take 300 mg aspirin if you have and nothing else. Do not exercise to relieve pain. Learn the critical steps you should take if you suspect a heart attack.

What is a heart-healthy diet after a heart attack?

Not only food but also eating habits are important for a healthy heart and healthy life. When it comes to diet, a heart-healthy eating plan should include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oil, lean meat and skinless chicken or turkey. Get healthy stuff, make your meal and do not eat more than 3 times a day unless you have a specific disease.

What is the treatment of deep vein thrombosis?

Here is an overview of the treatment approaches for DVT.

  • İmmediate treatment: Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as iv heparin, subcutaneous low molecular weight heparin, direct oral anticoagulants and warfarin.
  • Thrombolytics: In severe cases if there is a risk of limb loss, or massive embolism due to the migration of the DVT to the lungs, thrombolytic drugs are used. It should be kept in mind that these drugs carry high risk of bleeding including intracranial bleeding.
  • Long-term management: compression stockings and continued anticoagulation for 3-6 months or even longer depending on the cause of DVT

What causes deep vein thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more veins in your body, usually in your legs. Primary causes and risk factors associated with DVT are listed below:

  • Prolonged immobility: Bed rest after surgery, pregnancy, long flights, long drive
  • Trauma or surgery: Trauma or surgery, especially of legs and hips, can damage blood vessels as well as cause prolonged immobility, increasing clot risks.
  • Medical conditions: Cancer, heart failure, autoimmune diseases, kidney diseases (nephrotic syndrome)
  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, taking hormone replacement therapy or taking oral contraceptives
  • Obesity
  • İncreased age above 60.
  • Smoking
  • Previous history of DVT of pulmonary embolism
  • Varicose veins
  • Catheters: Long-term use of centre catheters can irritate the vessel wall, leading to clots.
